🪔 About
Sharmistha Mukherjee is an accomplished Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, and former politician. Born on October 30, 1965, in West Bengal, India, she grew up in Delhi and is the daughter of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. Mukherjee began her formal Kathak training at the age of 12, studying under eminent gurus such as Pandit Durgalal, Vidushi Uma Sharma, and Rajendra Gangani. She identifies with the Jaipur gharana through her teachers. Her performances have been lauded by critics, with The Hindu describing them as "accomplished" and praising her precise footwork. With over 30 years of performing experience, Sharmistha Mukherjee has showcased her Kathak artistry in prestigious national and international forums across more than 40 countries, promoting India's cultural heritage. She is also a choreographer, known for her experimental approach, such as a production combining Rabindranath Tagore's poetry with Western classical music. In July 2014, Mukherjee entered politics, joining the Indian National Congress, and served as a National Spokesperson for the party. She contested the Delhi Assembly election in February 2015 from the Greater Kailash constituency. She quit active politics in 2021 to pursue other interests, including writing a book about her father and learning the piano. Currently, she runs the Pranab Mukherjee Legacy Foundation.
