🪔 About
Shika Mohanlall Harrypaul is a renowned Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer based in South Africa. She commenced her Kathak training in 1999 at the Institute of Classical Music & Dance, Kala Darshan, in Durban, under the rigorous tutelage of Shri Manesh Maharaj. Her unique style of Kathak integrates elements from the Jaipur, Lucknow, and Benares Gharanas. In 2005, she achieved her graduation as a professional Kathak dancer, marked by her Rangmanch Pravesh, a memorable solo performance at the Kendra Hall in Durban. Following her graduation, Shika authored "Kathak Darpan – A Reflection of Kathak" in 2006, a book intended as a reference for Kathak students, which she launched with a solo recital. She served as a senior dancer for Kala Darshan for nine years, performing extensively at conferences and cultural events, and taking lead roles in notable dance productions such as Utsav (2000), Dance Of The Gods (2002), and Krishnaleela (2004). In 2007, Shika relocated to Johannesburg and, recognizing a demand for pure Kathak, established Darpan Dance Studios in Randburg in 2008 with the support of her husband, Ashwin Harrypaul. She continues to teach Kathak across various locations in Gauteng, including Randburg, Midrand, Benoni, Fourways, and Roodepoort, and serves as a resident adjudicator for the dance category in the Gauteng Annual Hindi Eisteddfods. Shika is also currently pursuing further studies under Dr. Puru Dadheech and Pt. Mukandraj Deo. Awards & Honours: Benoni Community achievement award for uplifting Hindu Culture through dance.
