Shoba Narayan is a prominent exponent of Bharatanatyam, recognized as one of the leading figures of the classical Indian dance form in the United States. Her extensive training began at the tender age of four and a half at Nritya Geethanjali in Mumbai, India, a nationally renowned institution founded by Guru Rajee Narayan. Under Guru Rajee Narayan's tutelage, Shoba Narayan completed her Arangetram, a full-fledged dance debut, at the age of nine. She further honed her skills to become a certified Nattuvangam artist, demonstrating her mastery over rhythmic intricacies. Throughout her early career, Shoba Narayan garnered universal praise for her solo performances across India and West Asia, where her stunning control over laya (rhythm), posture, facial expressions, and grace were consistently highlighted. As a senior student at Nritya Geethanjali, she also took on increasing responsibilities as a teacher, training aspiring dancers. In 1985, Shoba Narayan migrated to the United States and subsequently established the Nritya Gitanjali School of Dance in Cleveland, Ohio. This institution marked a significant milestone as Cleveland's first full-fledged Bharatanatyam dance school. With a dance career spanning over 45 years, she has dedicated more than 30 years to teaching and propagating Bharatanatyam to students in the US. Her teaching methodology is characterized by a highly disciplined approach, emphasizing not only the technical aspects of the art form but also educating students about its rich traditions and cultural heritage. As a choreographer, Shoba Narayan is acclaimed for her unique creativity, having presented numerous dance pieces set to diverse genres of Indian music and themes. She achieves this while strictly adhering to the aesthetic principles of Bharatanatyam. Her students frequently participate in fundraisers and international diversity programs in Northeast Ohio, and many have received prestigious awards in various competitions. Over forty students have successfully completed their Arangetram under her guidance at her Cleveland school. She continues to train students at her residence in Strongsville and at the Shiva Vishnu Temple in Parma, Ohio.
