Shoba Natarajan is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer, recognized as one of the foremost exponents of both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Her artistic journey began at the age of five, with her Bharatanatyam training under the legendary Kamala. She made her arangetram (dance debut) at the age of eight, receiving critical acclaim for her captivating stage presence, graceful movements, and excellent technique. She continued her advanced Bharatanatyam training with the reputed guru Kalaimamani S. K. Rajaratnam, becoming a prominent advocate of the vibrant Vazhuvoor style. Fascinated by Kuchipudi, Shoba Natarajan became a senior disciple of the world-renowned guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam from the age of ten. She played lead roles in many of his dance ballets, including a memorable portrayal of Srinivasa in 'Srinivasa Kalyanam'. Her soul-stirring Kuchipudi recitals have garnered worldwide recognition for the dance form. Shoba Natarajan is also a trained Carnatic vocalist, having studied under eminent teachers Dr. B. Rajam Iyer and Dr. S. R. Janakiraman. Throughout her career, Shoba Natarajan has performed extensively across India and internationally, including tours of the USSR (where she was the first Kuchipudi dancer to tour in 1984), USA, Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. She is a skilled and experienced teacher and choreographer, known for her innovative techniques that blend modern sensibility with traditional grammar. She is the founder-director of Samskriti, a non-profit institute established in 1996 in Naperville, Illinois, dedicated to the promotion of Indian dance, music, and culture. She was also a co-founder of Nrityaranga, a dance cooperative in Madras.
