Shrimathi P. Malliga Kumar is a highly respected figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, and the founder of the Kalakendira Dance Academy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, established in 1983. With over 40 years of experience in performing and teaching, she has significantly contributed to the art form. Her foundational training in Bharatanatyam began at the age of five under Mrs. Kamala Ramachandran and Mrs. Indira Manikam of Tanjai Kamala Indira Dance Academy. To deepen her expertise, Mrs. Kumar traveled to India, where she received advanced tutelage from esteemed masters including the late 'Padmashri' Adyar K Lakshman, his brother Shriman Rama Rao, and Shrimathi Nagamani Rao of Bangalore. She also specialized in dance drama choreography under 'Padmashri' Mrs. Chandra K.N. Dhandayuthapani Pillai and honed her Nattuvangam skills under 'Padmashri' Adyar K. Lakshman. Additionally, her artistic development included initial vocal training from 'Thavil Vidhvan' V. Doraimani and 'Oduvar' Ratnasababathi Desikar, as well as Veenai lessons from Salem Jayalakshmi. As a devoted teacher, Shrimathi P. Malliga Kumar is recognized for her unique choreography and innovative presentation of Bharatanatyam. Under her guidance, Kalakendira Dance Academy has become a renowned institution, conducting numerous Salangai Poojai and Arangetrams. The academy has successfully trained a large number of gifted dancers, with over 100 students completing Salangai Poojai and 20 students completing Arangetram. Beyond teaching, the academy has produced various dance programs to raise funds for temples, charities, and international events such as the Pacific Asia Tourism Association Conference (PATA) and Tamil Research Conferences in Kuala Lumpur and Mauritius. Her dedication and passion have solidified her position as a reputable figure in the world of Bharatanatyam, leaving a lasting impression on her students and the wider community.
