Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan (December 7, 1928 – February 21, 2016) was a legendary Indian classical dancer and an eminent guru of Bharatanatyam, particularly renowned for her unparalleled mastery and teaching of Abhinaya, the expressive aspect of dance. Born Kalanidhi Ganapathy in a Brahmin family, her mother's keen interest led her to begin dance training at the age of seven. She received initial training in Abhinayam from Mylapore Gowri Ammal, one of the last Devadasis of the Kapaleeshwara temple in Madras, and in Nritta (pure dance) from Kannappa Mudaliar of Kanchipuram. She also briefly learned from Guru Chinnayya Naidu and received Carnatic music training from Guru Manakkal Sivarajan and Guru Kamakshi Ammal, daughter of Veena Dhanammal, from whom she acquired a vast repertoire of Padams and Javalis. Kalanidhi Narayanan made her stage debut (Arangetram) at the age of 12 in 1935 at the Senate House in Chennai for the Madras Music Academy, becoming one of the early non-devadasi girls to perform Bharatanatyam publicly. She performed regularly between 1938 and 1943, even performing at the Madras Music Academy in 1939. However, after her marriage, she took a hiatus from dance for nearly thirty years. Her remarkable comeback to the dance world occurred in 1973 at the age of 46, spurred by arts patron Y.G. Doraiswamy, who recognized the need to revive the art of Abhinaya. Kalanidhi Narayanan quickly became the most sought-after teacher for Abhinaya, revolutionizing its teaching methodology and making it accessible to a new generation of dancers. She founded her institution, Abhinayasudha, in Madras (now Chennai) in 1980, and also conducted special courses at institutions like M.S. University, Baroda, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Bombay. She choreographed and presented several dance programs focusing on abhinaya, including 'Ashta Nayika', 'Contrasts and Parallels', 'Women of Ramayana', and 'Nayika Bhava in Alwar Hymns'. Throughout her illustrious second career, she received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan (1985), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1990), the Nrithya Choodamani (1990), the Kalaimamani (1990), the Kalidas Samman (1998), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna (2011). Kalanidhi Narayanan passed away on February 21, 2016, at the age of 87, leaving behind a profound legacy through her countless students who continue to propagate her unique approach to Abhinaya worldwide.
