Sooraj Subramaniam is an Australian-Belgian dance artist of Malaysian-Indian heritage, recognized for his work in Indian classical and contemporary dance forms. He received his early training in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and contemporary dance at the Sutra Dance Theatre in Malaysia. He further pursued classical ballet training in Australia with Stella Johnson and graduated from the Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts with an Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance). During his time in Perth, Western Australia, he co-directed Mudhra Dance Company with Premala Sangarananda, where he taught and performed Indian classical and contemporary dance. In 2007, Subramaniam moved to London and primarily worked with Srishti-Nina Rajarani Dance Creations, teaching and performing Bharatanatyam. His international touring experience includes collaborations with companies such as Akademi, Balbir Singh Dance Company, and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance. He also expanded his classical vocabulary by training in Kathak with Urja Desai Thakore in London. Since relocating to Ghent, Belgium, in 2012, Subramaniam has worked as a freelancer, collaborating with independent choreographers like Nicole Kohler, Kalpana Raghuraman, Seeta Patel, and the Maghenta Collective. He continues his intensive Odissi training with guru Bijayini Satpathy in India and has refined his abhinaya skills with Bragha Bessell in Chennai, and attended Odissi classes with Madhavi Mudgal in Delhi. Subramaniam's choreographic works include "Nocturne," which premiered at The Place Theatre in London, "PALLAVI" for four Odissi dancers, and "Mandala". He also created the solo dance-theatre production "Reflections of an Indian Dancer" in collaboration with Balbir Singh Dance Company, which incorporates Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kathak. His award-winning dance film, "Other Places of Being," was a collaboration with Malaysian artist January Low and commissioned by the Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York. In 2023, he was nominated for Outstanding Male Classical Performance at the Critics' Circle UK National Dance Awards for his role in Seeta Patel's "The Rite of Spring". He currently resides in Ghent, Belgium, and divides his professional time between the UK and Belgium.
