Bhagavathula Venkata Naga Sowmya, known as Sowmya BVN, is a prominent Indian classical dancer specializing in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. Born on July 20, 1985, in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, she hails from a distinguished Kuchipudi family; her father, Natyacharya Sri Bhagavutla Venkatarama Sarma, and grandfather, Bhagavatula Yegna Narayana Sarma, are both renowned Kuchipudi gurus and choreographers. Sowmya began her dance training at an early age under her father and commenced stage performances at the age of five. She holds a BBM degree from Sarada College, Vijayawada, and has earned Certificates and Diplomas in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Furthering her academic pursuits, she completed M.A. degrees in both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, as well as an M.A. in English and a Diploma in Carnatic Vocal music. Sowmya has performed in over 7500 solo and ballet performances throughout her career. She is a recipient of the C.C.R.T. Scholarship and a Senior Scholarship from the Central Government of India for Kuchipudi dance, along with a Central Government Scholarship for 12 years. Her international engagements include performances and training students in the United States (Virginia, Washington D.C., Connecticut, San Francisco, California) in 2008 and 2010, and participation in the Dubai Shopping Festival in 2002 and the Silicon Andhra festival in 2008. Sowmya has portrayed various mythological characters such as Krishna, Vivekananda, Mahishasura Mardhini, and Sarmistha, and has also participated in social awareness dance ballets. She teaches Kuchipudi at Ghantasala Music College and assists her father in his numerous dance schools.
