Vidhushi Sowmya Govind Naidu is a multifaceted Bharatanatyam artist, choreographer, instructor, and Yoga Guru, currently based in Qatar. Born to G.K. Sampath Kumar and Vijayalakshmi, she was initiated into the aesthetic field of dance at the age of six under the tutelage of Guru Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy from Mysore. She underwent many years of intensive training in Bharatanatyam and basic yoga. Sowmya is married to Govind Naidu and is actively pursuing her passion for dance in Qatar. She is the founder and head of Kala Sowmyam, an institution in Qatar that imparts knowledge in the Pandanallur Style of Bharatanatyam and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The academy emphasizes the purity of these disciplines to promote Indian arts and increase community participation in multicultural Qatar. Kala Sowmyam has been providing classical dance and yoga education in Qatar for approximately eight years, training students in Bharatanatyam, Yoga, and Nattuvangam. Students at Kala Sowmyam can also take certified examinations affiliated with Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Sowmya Govind Naidu is a member of the International Dance Council CID, UNESCO, and is a registered artist for conducting dance examinations affiliated with Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Qatar. She is also a recipient of the Central Government Scholarship, awarded by the Union Ministry of Culture for Dance (2003-2005) and for Nattuvangam (2006-2008). Her performances have received positive reviews in publications such as The New Indian Express and Indian Express, which have praised her pure and expressive dance, captivating recitals, and faultless Bharatanatyam.
