🪔 About
Sreelakshmy Govardhanan is a renowned Kuchipudi artist from India, widely acclaimed for her unparalleled grace, lightening footwork, and exquisite abhinaya (emotive ability). Born in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, Kerala, she discovered Kuchipudi at the age of thirteen, feeling an immediate affinity for the art form despite earlier training in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. Her quest for authentic Kuchipudi led her to train under distinguished gurus such as Srimati Vyjayanti Kashi and Srimati Manju Bhargavi. A pivotal moment in her journey was in 2008 when she became a disciple of Kuchipudi Yakshagana maestro Guru Sri Pasumarthy Rattaiah Sarma in the historic Kuchipudi village in Andhra Pradesh. This intensive training required her to unlearn previous techniques and master the form's linguistic aspects, as her guru primarily spoke Telugu. Govardhanan is known for her adherence to the traditional Kuchipudi Yakshagana style, blending innovation with tradition in her performances. Her ability to engage audiences while remaining immersed in her role has earned her critical acclaim. She is the founder and artistic director of Avantika Space for Dance in Thrissur, Kerala, an institution dedicated to learning, performance, and research. Through Avantika, she trains students and facilitates their direct learning from Guru Rattaiah Sarma, emphasizing the preservation of Kuchipudi's traditional roots. Her choreographic works often focus on women's emotional journeys, including productions like 'Soorpanakha', 'Radhe', 'Poothanamoksham', 'Mandodari Shabdam', and 'Silappathikaram'. She has also choreographed traditional Kuchipudi Yakshagana productions such as 'Seetha Swayamvaram' and staged 'Usha Parinayam' in 2023, the first full-length Kuchipudi Yakshagana production in Kuchipudi village in decades. Sreelakshmy Govardhanan has performed at prestigious festivals and venues across India and internationally, including the Nehru Centre London, Khajuraho Dance Festival, Konark Dance Festival, and the World Music Institute's Dancing the Gods festival in New York. Awards & Honours: Kalashree, Binfield Endowment, Bharatham Yuva Kalakar, Kala Ratna, Singar Mani, Natya Ratna, Nalanada Nrutya Nipuna, Sri Jayadeva Rashtriya Yuva Prathibha Puraskar, Kalavaahini Trust Senior Fellowship, Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar Award.
