Sri T.K.Narayan

Sri T.K. Narayan, a senior Bharatanatyam guru, was born in Hassan, Karnataka. He was a direct disciple of the revered Gurus Sri Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and Sri Muthu Kumara Pillai, with his training dating back to the 1940s. In the early 1940s, he was inspired by and closely associated with the legendary dancers Ram Gopal and Madam Menaka, performing with Ram Gopal for many years. Prior to establishing his own institution, he served as a Director in their academies. In 1947, Sri T.K. Narayan produced and directed two acclaimed ballets in Bombay: Tagore's "Chitra" and "Birth of our Nation." These productions, created in collaboration with Smt. Himakesarcodi and Sri Krishnan Kutty, received high appreciation, including from Lord and Lady Mountbatten. He founded his institution, the 'Academy of Bharata Natyam,' in 1948. In 1952, he joined the Government College of Music and Dance in Hyderabad as its inaugural Bharatanatyam lecturer, eventually retiring as its Principal. Sri T.K. Narayan was known for his puritanical and perfectionist approach to dance. His wife, Smt. Jayalakshmi Narayan, a talented vocalist, worked closely with him at the Academy. She taught for over four decades in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and also toured Europe and Russia in 1961 as an accompanist for the renowned danseuse Smt. Kamala, and had a teaching assignment in Singapore in 1976. Sri T.K. Narayan passed away on March 2, 2005, in Hyderabad, at the age of 82.
