Srilatha Singh is a distinguished Bharatanatyam artist, educator, and the artistic director of Chitrakaavya Dance, a non-profit organization she co-founded in 2014 and which was incorporated in 2015. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, she leads Chitrakaavya Dance in exploring and presenting traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire, as well as fostering innovation and intercultural conversations through performing arts. Singh's training in Bharatanatyam, primarily in the Kalakshetra tradition, began in her youth in India, under the tutelage of eminent gurus Shri Dhananjayan, Guru Kalyani Shekhar, and Smt Ambica Buch. Her commitment to artistic growth is evident in her continuous refreshment of training, including facilitating and attending workshops with internationally reputed artists such as Bijayini Satpathy, Praveen Kumar, Janaki Rangarajan, and Shankar Kandasamy. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Srilatha Singh holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics, specializing in 3-manifold topology, a field that explores the geometry of spaces. This academic fascination with geometry profoundly influences her approach to Indian Classical Dance, where she enjoys choreographing to new themes and integrating elements of history, mythology, rhythm, mathematics, poetry, and theatre. She is recognized for her contributions to the local arts scene, having received the Salt Lake City Mayor's Artist Award in 2023. Singh has guest-taught Bharatanatyam and conducted master classes at various institutions, including Snow College, Weber State University, University of Utah, Westminster College, and Utah Valley University. Her performances have graced numerous cultural festivals and venues, such as Living Traditions, Ring around the Rose, Living Legacy Community, and International Day Festival. She is also a member of the Utah Presents Advisory Board, contributing to cross-cultural dialogues that inform her artistic investigations. Her work at Chitrakaavya Dance aims to bridge cultural gaps and promote a deeper appreciation for Bharatanatyam among both diaspora and mainstream audiences.
