Srimathy Mohan is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, guru, and the founder-director of Silambam Phoenix, a Bharatanatyam institution based in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of ten in 1977 under the tutelage of the eminent Guru Padmasri Prof. Sudharani Raghunatha at Shree Bharatalaya in Chennai, India, continuing her studies until 1987. In addition to Bharatanatyam, she also received training in Carnatic vocal music from Shree Bharatalaya and Kalakad Sri S. Mahadevan. After moving to the United States in 1987, Srimathy Mohan pursued higher education, earning a B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Alabama, an M.S. in Operations Research from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Montreal. She is also an emeritus professor of Supply Chain Management at Arizona State University. In May 2000, with the blessings of her guru, she founded Silambam Phoenix, a Bharatanatyam school in alliance with Shree Bharatalaya, dedicated to preserving and promoting the Thanjavur style of Bharatanatyam. Silambam Phoenix was registered as a non-profit arts organization in Arizona in 2008 and obtained 501(c)3 tax-exempt status in 2010. As a performer, Dr. Mohan has showcased her mastery through creative Bharatanatyam programs in both India and the United States. She was a principal dancer in "Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum" (2007) and "The Milestones Tour" (2022). Under her guidance, Silambam Phoenix has produced numerous full-length original productions and has presented 18 students in their Arangetrams. Her performances and those of Silambam Phoenix often serve as fundraisers for various social causes, including illiteracy, food insecurity, women's empowerment, and children's health and wellness.
