🪔 About

Sruti Das is an Indian classical and contemporary dancer and choreographer, known for her extensive training in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, and her innovative work blending classical forms with modern dance. She received 20 years of training in Bharatanatyam from Kalamandalam, Calcutta, India, and studied Kathakali under Guru Govindan Kutti. Das also earned a national scholarship for modern dance in India. Her career highlights include working with prominent figures in Indian dance such as Dr. Manjusree Chaki Sirkar and Ranjabati Sirkar, who were instrumental in the Nava-Ntritya movement, and the internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Chandralekha of Chennai. Sruti Das has represented India as a modern dancer at various international festivals, including the World Expo (International Festival) in Europe in 1998 and the Singapore Art Festival in 2000. Her choreographic work extends to international collaborations, such as a dance piece she choreographed in China in 2010 under the direction of Guy Caron, the director of creation for KA by Cirque Du Soleil. She also served as the Chairperson, Art Director, and choreographer for the NABC 2012 Closing Ceremony 'East meets West'. Currently based in Las Vegas, Sruti Das teaches Indian classical dance to the younger generation of Indian Americans. Her contemporary dance work is characterized by abstraction, austerity, minimalism, and a distinct physical idiom that maintains the geometric weight of Bharatanatyam while expanding volume and space through elements of Kalarippayattu (ancient Indian martial art) and Yoga. Awards & Honours: National Scholarship for Modern Dance.
