Suhaee Abro is a Pakistani dancer and actress, born and raised in Karachi. She is a trained classical dancer, specializing in Bharatanatyam, and has also studied Kathak and Odissi, three forms of Indian classical dance. Abro began her formal classical dance training at the age of seven under the tutelage of veteran classical dancer Sheema Kermani. Her father, Khuda Bux Abro, is a visual artist, and her mother, Attiya Dawood, is a renowned Sindhi poet and activist. Abro has a diverse career that spans television plays, theatre, documentaries, and music videos. She has performed her choreographic work and collaborated with other artists across South Asia, Europe, the UK, and the USA. In 2013, she received the Best New Television Sensation Award (Female) at the 1st Hum Awards. She is also recognized for her acting roles, including the lead in the Urdu film "My Pure Land," which was Britain's submission for the foreign language film category at the Oscars in 2017. Beyond her performance career, Suhaee Abro is also a dedicated teacher and activist. She began teaching dance in 2010, instructing diverse groups of people in Bharatanatyam and the basics of Kathak. She is one of the founders and the Dance Director/Performing Artist of the group Nritaal. Abro is also the founder of "dance, heart & mind," an initiative that uses movement for healing, particularly working with acid burn survivors, women and children in shelter homes, and migrant mothers and children. She has used performance as a tool for healing and resistance, advocating for women's rights. Abro has faced personal challenges, including an injury that required tailbone surgery in 2010, and a diagnosis of epilepsy in her late teens. Despite these hurdles, she has continued to pursue her passion for dance, stating, "if I don't dance I'm taken away from my soul".
