Suparna Basu is a dedicated classical Indian dancer, teacher, choreographer, and the founder of Mayur Dance Academy in Wellington, New Zealand. Her journey in classical dance commenced at the tender age of three, with formal training in Kathak and Rabindra Nritya. At eight years old, she further broadened her artistic foundation by incorporating Bharatanatyam, a traditional South Indian dance form accompanied by Carnatic music, into her studies. Over two decades, Basu immersed herself in various classical dance styles across India, actively participating in and orchestrating countless dance events, including performances, choreographies, and directorial roles. Her mastery in Bharatanatyam encompasses a wide range of recitals such as Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Sabdam, Varnam, Padam, Tillana, Sloka, and Dashavatar. Beyond classical forms, she has also explored contemporary dance, drawing inspiration from figures like Pandit Uday Shankar and the aesthetic expressions of classical-folk fusions. Suparna Basu moved to Wellington, New Zealand, in 2005. For approximately six years, she contributed to the local community by teaching dance in a voluntary capacity. This period of community engagement laid the groundwork for her significant contribution to Indian classical dance in New Zealand. In 2012, she officially established the Mayur Dance Academy, initially starting with just eleven students. Under her leadership, the academy has flourished, becoming the largest Indian Classical dance school in Wellington. A unique aspect of her teaching is that she is the only instructor in New Zealand who teaches both Bharatanatyam and Kathak, two distinct and intricate forms of Indian classical dancing. The Mayur Dance Academy is structured with a comprehensive syllabus and an examination system, ensuring a high standard of training and providing students with certificates and mark sheets upon completion. Through her academy, Suparna Basu continues to foster a deep appreciation and understanding of Indian classical dance in New Zealand.
