Surya N Rao is an accomplished Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized for his versatility across multiple dance forms. He received rigorous training in Bharatanatyam under Guru Chandrashekar Navada. His expertise extends to Kuchipudi, where he was trained by Guru Smt. Veena Murthy Vijay, and Kathak, under the tutelage of Guru Dr. Maya Rao. Further enriching his artistic repertoire, Surya N Rao has also trained in Indian contemporary dance with Madhu Nataraj, as well as in the Indian martial art forms of Kalaripayattu and Thang-tha. He has also explored folk-ritual dance forms and Yakshagana, which contribute to his diverse performance style. Academically, Surya N Rao holds a bachelor's degree in Choreography and has successfully qualified Vidhwath in Bharatanatyam. He is a graded artist of Doordarshan, India's national television channel, and possesses a strong understanding of Natuvangam and Indian classical music, which enhances his artistry. His extensive career includes over 1000 performances at major dance festivals across India and on prestigious international platforms in Europe, the Middle East, the United States of America, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Surya N Rao is also a dedicated choreographer for educational institutions, driven by his passion for spreading awareness and appreciation of dance. He co-runs the MAHAMAYA ARTS FOUNDATION in Bangalore with his wife, Prathama Prasad Rao. Beyond dance, he has also ventured into acting, appearing in Kannada, Telugu, and Tulu feature films.
