Swamimalai K. Rajarathnam Pillai (1931-1994) was a highly respected Bharatanatyam guru, nattuvanar, and choreographer, renowned for his contributions to the Vazhuvoor style of dance. Born in Swamimalai in 1931, he was a hereditary practitioner from the Isaivellalar community. He began his career as an assistant to his grandfather, the eminent Padmashree Vazhuvur Ramiah Pillai, performing nattuvangam and singing for leading dancers of the time, including Kamala Lakshman, Kanaka Srinivasan, Vyjayanthimala, and Komala Varadhan. Rajarathnam Pillai was celebrated for his exceptional musical talent, brisk jathis, and elegant nattuvangam. He established his own dance school, Kamala Kala Nilayam, in 1970, which was later renamed Rajarathnalaya Bharatha Kalai Koodam by his grandfather. He was known for his patient and committed teaching, often customizing choreography to suit the individual physique and artistic potential of each student. His dedication attracted students from across India and abroad, including the U.S., Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Kenya, and Canada. Throughout his career, he received prestigious awards such as Kalaimamani, Natya Selvam, and Sangeetha Kala Sikamani. Rajarathnam Pillai passed away in 1994, but his legacy continues through his numerous students and his family, including his daughter Jayakamala Pandiyan, who teaches Bharatanatyam in Bangalore, and his granddaughter Nrithya Pillai, who continues her advanced training and teaching.
