T. D. Rajendra, born on July 16, 1965, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is a renowned Indian classical dancer, choreographer, teacher, and institution head. He is a prominent figure in the Indian classical dance scene, particularly known for his work with his wife, Nirupama Rajendra, as part of the acclaimed duo. Rajendra received extensive training in multiple classical dance forms; he learned Kathak from gurus such as Maya Rao, Kumudini Lakhia, and Arjun Mishra. For Bharatanatyam, his mentors included U.S. Krishnarao, Chandrabhaga Devi, Kalamandalam Radhika, and Narmada. He also delved into the theoretical aspects of dance, studying Natyashastra under Sundari Santanam and Padma Subrahmanyam. In 1994, T. D. Rajendra co-founded the Abhinava Dance Company with Nirupama Rajendra, which has since become a leading production house recognized globally. The company is celebrated for its innovative approach, blending traditional Indian classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Kathak with modern sensibilities. Through the Abhinava Dance Company, Rajendra has co-created and presented over 200 original choreographed works, reaching an audience of more than 7.5 million connoisseurs across five continents. The duo also established the Abhinava Dance Academy, where they have trained over 3,000 students in Kathak and Bharatanatyam over the past 35 years, with more than 50 students successfully graduating in both dance forms. Their contributions extend to significant research and documentation, including the video documentation of 108 Deshi Marga Adavus and the direction, choreography, and video documentation of the 7th-century Sanskrit play "Bhagavadajjukam" based on Natyashastra guidelines. Rajendra and Nirupama have also been instrumental in reviving ancient traditions, such as the "Madanothsava" festival. The Abhinava Dance School is affiliated with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
