Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingam Pillai, also known as T.K. Mahalingam Pillai or TKM, was a highly influential figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam. Born in 1917 in Thirumalairayanpattinam, Tamil Nadu, he hailed from a distinguished lineage of Nattuvanars. He received his initial training in the Thanjavur tradition of Bharatanatyam from his illustrious father, Vidwan T. Kuppiah Pillai, and his uncle, T.S. Govindaraja Pillai. His Carnatic music lessons were under Pandanallur Gnani Pillai. Mahalingam Pillai was an eminent guru, master trainer, and choreographer, known for his profound language skills, competence in singing, and nattuvangam. He was instrumental in transmitting the purity and eclectic approach of the Thanjavur style to a multitude of students, primarily in Bombay (Mumbai). He contributed original compositions to the Bharatanatyam repertoire, choreographed numerous dance-dramas and individual pieces from Tamil classics, and even adapted Hindi verses for the dance form. In 1945, he co-founded the prestigious Sri Rajarajeswari Bharatha Natya Kala Mandir in Bombay with his brother-in-law Guru Govindraj Pillai and sister Karunambal, an institution he later served as Principal. He passed away in December 2002 in Mumbai. Awards & Honours: Kalaimamani (1972), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1985).
