Thokchom Chaotombi Singh, a distinguished Indian classical dance figure, was born on September 1, 1948, in Uripok Laikhurembi Leikai, Imphal, Manipur, India. He is widely recognized for his significant contributions to creative and experimental dance, particularly in the Manipuri style. Chaotombi Singh's early training in Manipuri dance was under the tutelage of L. Amuyaima Singh and Khaidem Lokeshwar Singh. He also delved into the martial art form of Thang-ta, learning from Damu Singh and Khelchandra Singh. Furthering his expertise, he pursued choreography studies at the Natya Institution of Choreography in New Delhi from 1969 to 1972, where he was mentored by Shrimati Maya Rao Natarajan. He earned a gold medal for Traditional Dance with a diploma degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Akademi (JNMDA) in 1973. His professional career at JNMDA began in 1975 as a Production Assistant. He was promoted to choreographer two years later and subsequently became the in-charge of the production unit in 1987. During his tenure at JNMDA, he choreographed numerous acclaimed dance-dramas, including "Wainupareng Thoibi," "Keibul Lamjao," "Lei Langba," and "Meghadoot." His work often integrated classical, folk, traditional Meitei dance, and martial arts. Notably, "Keibul Lamjao" was adapted into the internationally recognized film "Sangai: The Dancing Deer of Manipur," for which he received an international award for choreography in 1984 in the USA. He retired from JNMDA on October 31, 2008, but continued to contribute to the arts, expressing an interest in writing books on Manipuri Ballet fundamentals. Thokchom Chaotombi Singh's dedication and innovative approach to dance have cemented his legacy as a revered guru in Indian classical dance.
