Thomas Vo Van Tao is a pioneering and rare male exponent of Indian classical dance, particularly renowned for his mastery in Mohiniyattam. Hailing from France, he began his journey in Indian classical dance at the age of 12 with Bharatanatyam, dedicating over a decade to mastering its intricacies. He later transitioned to Mohiniyattam at 24, finding a profound connection with its fluid movements and aesthetic. Thomas received his training in Mohiniyattam under the mentorship of Smt. Kalamandalam Hymavathi and Dr. Neena Prasad, with Dr. Neena Prasad being his current guru. His performances, acclaimed for their grace and fluidity, have captivated audiences globally in countries including India, France, Canada, and Sweden. Notable performance venues include NMACC Mumbai, UNESCO Paris, and the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco. Beyond performing, Thomas is dedicated to imparting his knowledge, teaching at the prestigious Mandapa Centre in Paris and conducting workshops across Europe. Academically, he holds degrees in History, Hindi, Language Didactics, and Performing Arts, with his research focusing on the contemporary history of Bharatanatyam and male performers. He is recognized for challenging the conventional notions of gender in classical dance, emphasizing that dance is genderless and suitable for all bodies.
