Thiruvidaimarudur Kuppiah Kalyanasundaram, born in 1932 in Thiruvidaimarudur, Tamil Nadu, India, is a highly renowned Bharatanatyam guru and choreographer. He hails from an illustrious eight-generation lineage of Nattuvanars, traditional dance teachers, with his ancestors having been honored in various royal courts. His grandfather, Vidwan Panchapakesa Nattuvanar, was a respected authority on Abhinaya and is credited with compiling the Tamil treatise 'Abhinaya Navaneetham'. Kalyanasundaram made his debut at the tender age of six at the Sri Kumbeswaran Temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. He received his foundational training in Bharatanatyam from senior members of his family, including his father Guru Kuppiah Pillai, his brother Guru Mahalingam Pillai, his brother-in-law Guru Govindraj Pillai, and his sister Smt. Karunambal. Further enriching his artistic foundation, he also studied Carnatic music under Vidwan Alathur Panchapakesa Iyer and mridangam from Vidwan Raghunatha Iyer. As the director and principal teacher of the esteemed Sri Raja Rajeshwari Natya Kala Mandir in Mumbai, Kalyanasundaram has been a torchbearer of the Thanjavur tradition of Bharatanatyam. His work is characterized by its structured presentation and emphasis on rhythmic precision. He has choreographed numerous acclaimed dance-dramas and productions, such as Thirukkutrala Kuravanji, Sri Andal, Skanda Leela, Krishna Leela, and Thyagabrahmanjali, which are celebrated for their rich tapestry of choreography, music, and literature. His international contributions include leading a 10-member dance troupe representing India at the International Arts Festival of China and presenting thematic programs at various international dance festivals across Australia, America, Canada, Europe, Indonesia, Columbia, Mexico, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Nepal. He has also collaborated with other eminent gurus in choreography. For his outstanding contributions, he has been conferred with prestigious awards including the Padma Shri in 2023, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 1999-2000, the Kalaimamani in 1994, the Sarngadeva Fellowship in 1988, and the Best Teacher and Choreographer Award by the Madras Music Academy.
