T. K. Mahalingam Pillai, often referred to as TKM, was a highly influential guru and contributor to Bharatanatyam in the 20th century. Born in 1917 at Thirumalairayanpattinam, Tamil Nadu, into a distinguished family of Nattuvanars, he was immersed in the Tanjavur tradition of Bharatanatyam from a young age. He received his initial training from his illustrious father, Vidwan T. Kuppiah Pillai, and his uncle, T.S. Govindaraja Pillai. His Carnatic Music lessons were guided by Pandanallur Gnani Pillai. Mahalingam Pillai migrated to Mumbai (then Bombay) and became a prime architect and later the Principal of the renowned Sri Rajarajeswari Bharatha Natya Kala Mandir, an institution regarded for its excellence in Bharatanatyam. He was known for his commitment as a teacher and a traditionalist, transmitting the purity of style and eclectic approach inherited from his mentors. While a stickler for tradition, he was also open to innovation, contributing original compositions to the Bharatanatyam repertoire, choreographing dance-dramas, and adapting Hindi verses for the dance form. Throughout his career, TKM trained a large number of Bharatanatyam dancers, notably in Mumbai, and left behind a rich legacy. He passed away in December 2002 in his adopted city of Mumbai.
