Uma B. Ramesh, formerly known as Uma Balasubramanian, is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer who commenced her training at the age of five under the tutelage of the late Guru K. J. Govindarajan in New Delhi. Following her arangetram in 1981, she pursued advanced training with Guru Smt. S. Kanaka, also in New Delhi, to further refine her artistry. She is recognized as a Top-Grade Artist with Doordarshan and holds the status of an empanelled artist in the Established Category with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. Throughout her career, Uma B. Ramesh has graced numerous prestigious stages across India and internationally, including performances at the Khajuraho Festival in 1992, the Sangeet Natak Academy in Hyderabad in 1988, and a successful tour of South Africa, Zambia, Re-Union Islands, and the Kingdom of Lesotho in 2003. Critics have lauded her for her eloquent style, excellent footwork, and profound abhinaya (expressive acting), with The Hindu noting her "unwavering stamina" and "intense internal orientation" in 2005. Her performances are characterized by a blend of linear geometrical perfection and a velvety glow in mimetic passages, captivating audiences with the joy of movement and dance. Most recently, in March 2024, she presented a thematic margam on Lord Shiva for Brahma Gana Sabha, showcasing her innovative choreography and deep understanding of the classical form.
