Ramesh, formerly known as Uma Balasubramanian, is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer, widely recognized for her profound dedication and artistic contributions to Indian classical dance. Her journey into Bharatanatyam commenced at the tender age of five, under the esteemed guidance of the late guru K. J. Govindarajan in New Delhi. This foundational training laid the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to the art form. Following her Arangetram in 1981, a significant milestone marking her formal debut, she continued to refine her artistry. Her pursuit of perfection led her to undertake further intensive training under guru Smt. S. Kanaka, also based in New Delhi, deepening her understanding and mastery of Bharatanatyam. In her ongoing quest for artistic growth, she is currently receiving specialized training in Abhinaya, the expressive aspect of dance, from the renowned Smt. Bragha Bessel. Uma B. Ramesh holds significant recognition within India's cultural landscape, being a Top-Grade Artist with Doordarshan, India's national public broadcaster, a title that signifies a high level of artistic merit and national prominence. Furthermore, she is an empanelled artist in the Established Category with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi, an organization dedicated to promoting India's cultural heritage globally.
