Uma Muralikrishna is a widely recognized and esteemed Indian classical dancer, proficient in both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Her journey in dance began at the tender age of five, receiving her initial Bharatanatyam training under Padmashri K.N. Dandayudhapani Pillai, and subsequently under Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman. Her dedication to Kuchipudi led her to train under the tutelage of Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempatti Chinna Satyam. Throughout her illustrious career, Uma Muralikrishna has graced numerous prestigious stages across India, including the Music Academy, Krishna Gana Sabha, Bharath Kalachar, Karthik Fine Arts, the Surya festival, Khajuraho festival, Mahabalipuram festival, Natyanjali Festival, and for the International Dance Alliance. Her performances have also captivated international audiences in cultural centers abroad, spanning the Gulf Countries, Singapore, Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, USA, and Canada. Dance critics have lauded her as "Poetry in Dance" and "Poetry in Movement" for her expressive and captivating style. Notable performances include her portrayal of Madhavi in Shri Madurai. R. Muralidaran's "Silapadhigaram" and her revival of the rare 500-year-old Kuchipudi item "Simhanandini" at the "Les Oriental" festival in France. She is also an "A" grade artiste in both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi at Doordarshan Kendra. In April 2007, she presented 'Sura Sundhari Vaibhavam', a thematic group dance production supported by the Department of Culture, Government of India. She regularly performs for the 'Semester at Sea' program, introducing American students to the cultural heritage of South India in Chennai. Uma Muralikrishna is the Founder-Director of the Subhasheela Academy of Fine Arts, a cultural organization dedicated to promoting classical Indian dance and music, based in Chennai. Her teaching legacy includes conducting workshops and Rangapravesams for her disciples, such as Roshni Raju, who performed her Kuchipudi Rangapravesam under Uma Muralikrishna in Chennai in 2011.
