Uma Palam Pulendran is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, dedicated teacher, and choreographer, recognized for her elegant performances and avant-garde interpretations of the classical dance form. She began her dance training at the age of four, initially under the tutelage of Vijayambigai Indira Kumar and Renuka Arumuga Swamy. Later, she became a senior disciple of the internationally acclaimed dance couple, The Dhananjayans, training with them for over ten years. Her arangetram (solo debut) took place in Chennai in 1993. Pulendran is the Artistic Director of Natya Dhaara, a Bharatanatyam institution she founded in Atlanta, Georgia, where she has been teaching for over 15 years. Her teaching and performing career spans more than two decades, with performances in prestigious festivals and productions across India, Sri Lanka, Greece, and the USA. She is known for her creative approach, juxtaposing traditional Bharatanatyam with contemporary themes and other art forms. In 2023, she celebrated the 30th anniversary of her arangetram with a performance titled “Guru Samarpanam” in Chennai, honoring her gurus.
