Vyjayanthimala Bali, born Vyjayanthimala Raman on August 13, 1933, in Triplicane, Madras Presidency (now Chennai), is a highly revered Indian classical dancer, actress, and parliamentarian. She is widely celebrated as the first female superstar of Indian cinema, a true trailblazer who profoundly influenced and elevated the role of dance in Indian films. Vyjayanthimala commenced her rigorous Bharatanatyam training at a tender age, learning from eminent gurus such as Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai and K.P. Kittappa Pillai. Her comprehensive artistic education also included Carnatic music, under the tutelage of masters like D. K. Pattammal and K. V. Narayanaswamy. A remarkable early achievement was her performance of a classical Indian dance for Pope Pius XII at Vatican City in 1940, when she was just seven years old. Her formal debut, or arangetram, took place at the age of 13. Her illustrious film career began in 1949 at the age of 16, and her cinematic performances were distinguished by their seamless integration of Indian classical dance with compelling dramatic acting. She is credited with setting a new standard, making classical dance an essential prerequisite for Indian film heroines. After a highly successful two-decade career in cinema, she retired from acting in 1970. Following her retirement, Vyjayanthimala has remained deeply committed to Bharatanatyam, actively continuing to perform and dedicating herself to extensive research into forgotten temple art forms. Her enduring passion for dance was notably demonstrated in February 2024, when, at the age of 90, she delivered a captivating Bharatanatyam recital at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a performance that widely circulated and garnered immense appreciation. Beyond her artistic pursuits, she also served as a distinguished Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
