Urmila Sathyanarayanan is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer specializing in Bharatanatyam, born on January 8, 1966, in Chennai, India. Her journey in dance began at a young age, receiving initial training from Sarasawathy Gana Nilayam under Ranganayaki Jayaraman. She further honed her skills under the tutelage of eminent gurus K. N. Dandayuthapani Pillai of the Vazhuvoor bani, Kalaimamani K. J. Sarasa, and Padma Bhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan. Sathyanarayanan made her arangetram at the age of ten in 1974 at the Madras Music Academy. Throughout her extensive career spanning several decades, Urmila Sathyanarayanan has captivated audiences nationally and internationally with her precise footwork, clean lines, graceful poses, and mastery of Arramandi. Her performances include prestigious events such as the Festival of India in Edinburgh, the Centenary of the Salt Sathyagraha in South Africa, and tours across Europe, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Australia. She is recognized as an 'A' Grade artist of Doordarshan Kendra and is empanelled by the ICCR. She has also choreographed and presented thematic productions like "Panchali Sapatham" and "Woman – 'Past, Present, Future'." In 1996, Urmila Sathyanarayanan founded her own institution, Natya Sankalpaa, in Kilpauk Gardens, Chennai. The academy is dedicated to imparting holistic training in Bharatanatyam, emphasizing not only practical dance but also the theoretical aspects, Carnatic music, and yoga. Under her guidance, over 100 students have successfully completed their arangetrams through Natya Sankalpaa.
