Urvashie Kissoon is a dedicated Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and instructor, known for her versatility in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathak. Born and raised in Queens, New York, she is a first-generation Guyanese-American with ancestral roots in India. Her extensive training began with Bharatanatyam under Srimati Guru Raha Rajeshwari and Srimati Guru Gargi Chattopadhyay, and Kuchipudi under Srimati Guru Gargi Chattopadhyay, completing her graduations in both disciplines in 2012 and Rangapravesham in 2014. She further expanded her artistic repertoire by training in Kathak under Guru Pandit Satya Narayana Charka and is also noted as a disciple of the renowned Kathak maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj. She completed her Kathak Rangmanch Pravesh in 2018. Kissoon is a well-known dancer in the Tri-State area and has performed internationally at prestigious venues including the City Hall of New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ellis Island, and in cities like Kolkata, India, and Seville, Spain. Her performances are recognized for their grace, musicality, and emotive storytelling. Beyond performing, Urvashie Kissoon is deeply passionate about teaching and mentorship. In 2021, she co-launched Kalakriti Academy of the Arts with Henna Khanijou, a school dedicated to Indian classical and contemporary dance forms. She is also a founding member of the New York Kathak Festival, a 501(c)3 organization aimed at promoting Kathak in New York City. To enhance her dance, she has also studied vocals, harmonium, tabla, sitar, and sarod at the East Indian Music Academy.
