Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma (1935–2012), popularly known as Satyam, was a legendary Indian classical dancer and choreographer, widely regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the Kuchipudi dance form. Born on September 9, 1935, in Kuchipudi village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, he hailed from the Vedantam family, which is deeply rooted in the Kuchipudi tradition. His parents were Vedantam Venkataratnam and Subbamma. Sarma began his artistic journey at the age of five, receiving initial training from his elder brother, Vedantam Prahalada Sarma. He further honed his skills under the tutelage of esteemed gurus like Vedantam Lakshminarayana Sastri and Chinta Krishnamurthy. Recognizing the integral role of music in Kuchipudi Yakshaganam, he also undertook classical music training from Yeleswarapu Seetharamanjaneyulu and Sishta Brahmaiah Sastry. He made his debut performance at the age of fourteen, participating in two melams, "Harischandra" and "Ramanatakam." His first major performance came at nineteen, when he portrayed the female role of Parvathi in "Usha Parinayam" in Delhi. Sarma was particularly celebrated for his unparalleled mastery in portraying female characters (Stree Vesham), making him synonymous with roles such as Satyabhama in "Bhama Kalapam," Usha in "Usha Parinayam," Deva Devi in "Vipra Narayana," Mohini in "Mohini Rukmangada," Sasirekha in "Sasirekha Parinayam," and Gollabhama in "Gollakalapam." His portrayal of Satyabhama became his signature role. Over a career spanning five decades, Sarma performed in over 10,000 shows, captivating audiences with his grace and emotive power. He innovated by developing "Eka Patra" Abhinayam, a solo acting approach, particularly for female roles. Beyond performing, Sarma contributed significantly to the theoretical aspects of dance, authoring texts on Natya Shastra, Abhinaya Darpanam, Tandava Lakshanam, and Alankara Shastram. Towards the latter part of his life, he dedicated himself to teaching at the Venkatarama Natya Mandali in his native Kuchipudi village, where he also served as President since 1969. He was also the Principal of Siddhendra Kalakshetra from 1969 to 1974. He was married to Lakshminarasamma and had a son and two daughters. His life has been documented in the film, "I am Satyabhama." Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma passed away on November 16, 2012, at the age of 77, in Vijayawada.
