Vanaja Narayanan is a respected figure in Indian classical dance, particularly known for her contributions to Bharatanatyam as a multi-faceted vocalist-nattuvanar and teacher. She received intensive training under the tutelage of the legendary Guru K.N. Dandayuthapani Pillai, a prominent natyacharya whose compositions are highly regarded in Bharatanatyam. Vanaja Narayanan was recognized as one of Guru Dandayuthapani Pillai's senior students, alongside other notable disciples such as Malati Srinvasan, Natanam, and Tirugokarnam Kalyanasundaram. She played a significant role in carrying forward the understated aesthetics and legacy of her guru. Her expertise as a vocalist-nattuvanar was showcased in a documentary for the Padavarnam Project, where she performed Guru Dandayuthapani's navaraga masterpiece, the padavarnam 'Swamiyai Azhaittodivaa'. Furthermore, she participated in a discussion with Srividya (Guru Dandayuthapani's star pupil) and Uma Anand (Guru Dandayuthapani's daughter and disciple) regarding the guru's compositions. Vanaja Narayanan was active as a dancer and teacher in the 1980s, contributing to the dissemination of the Dandayudhapani bani (style) of Bharatanatyam.
