Vasantha Krishnan is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized for her significant contributions to Indian classical dance in Canada. Born in a small village in Kerala, South India, she began her dance journey at the age of five in the 1950s. Krishnan received her training in India, specializing in the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam. In 1966, she immigrated to Quebec, Canada, where she continued to pursue and propagate the art form. In 1976, she founded the Nrithyalaya Dance School (also known as Nrithyalaya Foundation) in Montreal, an institution dedicated to teaching Indian classical dance, primarily Bharatanatyam. Krishnan is known for her unique choreographic style, which includes elaborate group presentations, vibrant dance dramas, and expressive solo pieces. Her teaching methodology emphasizes the precise execution of adavus (basic dance units) and a deep focus on Bhakthi (devotion). She has been instrumental in enlivening and spreading Bharatanatyam across Canada. Vasantha Krishnan is also noted for her innovative approach to choreography, often drawing inspiration from contemporary social issues. For instance, she created a work titled “Adharma” in 2018, which explored #MeToo stories within Hindu mythology. Earlier, she choreographed a piece addressing the war in Sri Lanka.
