Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy is a highly renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, guru, and scholar, hailing from Mysore, India. Born in Moodbidri, South Canara, in 1949, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of four under Guru Muralidhar Rao, winning a gold medal at a state-level competition by age five. She further honed her skills under the tutelage of the late Shri Rajaratnam Pillai, a disciple of Pandanallur Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, mastering the pristine Pandanallur style. Vasundhara Doraswamy is a pioneer in integrating Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and martial arts like Kalaripayattu and Thang-ta into Bharatanatyam. She trained in Ashtanga Yoga under the legendary Shri Pattabhi Jois in Mysore and earned a Ph.D. in 1988 for her research on the correlation between Yoga and Bharatanatyam. This interdisciplinary approach led to the development of her distinctive "Vasundhara Style," which is recognized for its unique blend of yogic precision, vibrant energy from martial arts, and expressive narrative depth. In 1986, she founded the Vasundhara Performing Arts Centre (VPAC) in Mysore, dedicated to preserving and teaching Bharatanatyam. As a venerated guru, she has trained three generations of disciples globally, many of whom have become accomplished dancers and teachers themselves. Dr. Doraswamy is also an A-Graded Artist in Doordarshan and has served on expert committees for Bharatanatyam appointed by the Department of Culture, Government of India. She has represented India as a cultural ambassador, performing and conducting workshops internationally, including at UNESCO for world peace initiatives.
