Vazhuvoor Samraj Kumaran is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam, and a torchbearer of the esteemed Vazhuvoor bani (style). He is the son of the renowned Guru Vazhuvoor R. Samraj (also known as Vazhuvoor Samraj Pillai) and the grandson of the legendary Natya Kala Kesari, Padmashree Vazhuvoor B. Ramiah Pillai. Continuing a rich family legacy that traces back approximately 2000 years, Kumaran currently manages and leads the Sri Vazhuvoorar Classical Bharatanatya Arts Academy, located at No. 12 Brindavan Street, Mylapore, Chennai – 4. Under his leadership, the academy upholds the distinctive Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, which is celebrated for its elegance, polished perfection, grace, spiritual dignity, and sculpturesque poses, emphasizing extraordinary suppleness of the body and limbs. Vazhuvoor Samraj Kumaran plays a pivotal role in organizing the annual Vazhuvoor Dance and Music Festival, a significant cultural event that showcases various performances and provides a platform for emerging artists. During this festival, the prestigious "Vazhuvoorar Award" is conferred upon distinguished experts in the field. Kumaran is dedicated to propagating the Vazhuvoor bani globally. In 2010, he conducted a workshop in Australia to introduce and establish the unique style to international dance learners. He actively teaches students at the Chennai academy, often collaborating with his sister, Smt. Kala Senthilnathan, who also serves as a guru there and at Shree Charan Fine Arts Academy in Coimbatore. His wife, Smt. Mangala Kumaran, further supports his efforts by conducting dance classes at the school, having started conducting arangetrams since 2002. His sister, Smt. Sridevi Senthil, contributes to spreading the family tradition by running a dance school in Sydney, Australia. Through his unwavering commitment, Vazhuvoor Samraj Kumaran ensures the continuity and global reach of the revered Vazhuvoor parampara.
