Vedantam Prahlada Sarma was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, actor, and guru, primarily recognized for his profound contributions to the Kuchipudi dance form. Born in 1923 in Kuchipudi village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, he hailed from a family deeply rooted in the Kuchipudi tradition. Sarma received his initial training from his father, Vedantam Rattayya Sanna, and further honed his skills under eminent gurus such as Vedantam Lakshminarayana Sastri and Vempati Venkatanarayana. He also learned from other senior family members, ensuring the continuity of the art form. Throughout his career, Vedantam Prahlada Sarma mastered both male and female roles in Kuchipudi performances, demonstrating a deep understanding of the dance and its accompanying music. He gained acclaim for his performances both within India and internationally. Dedicating over four decades to the art, he became a pivotal figure in the Kuchipudi community, often regarded as a "father figure" after the passing of earlier masters. Sarma was instrumental in the institutionalization and popularization of Kuchipudi, particularly through his leadership at Kalakshetram (also known as Siddhendra Kalakshetram, Eluru branch) in Eluru, a leading center for Kuchipudi. He significantly enhanced Kuchipudi dance education by developing a systematic teaching approach, standardizing basic steps ('Adugulu'), and documenting them in his publication 'Kuchipudi Nritya Manjari'. His notable students include his younger brother, Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma, and the renowned duo Raja and Radha Reddy. Vedantam Prahlada Sarma passed away in 1991.
