Vedantam Rattayya Sarma, born in 1943 to Annapurnamma and Ramayya, is a distinguished figure in the Kuchipudi Indian classical dance tradition. He received his training from renowned masters including Vedantam Parvatisam, Chinta Krishna Murthy, and Vempati Chinna Satyam. Sarma is widely recognized for his exceptional ability as a character actor, portraying a diverse range of roles in traditional Kuchipudi Yakshaganams and dance dramas. His notable portrayals include male characters such as Hiranyakasipa, Banasura, Aniruddha, Siva, Sri Rama, and Srinivasa, as well as the female character Rangasani. He has also performed in Vempati Chinna Satyam's productions, including “Akasaraja,” “Bhrigumaharshi,” and “Cholaraja” in “Padmavathi Srinivasa Kalyanam,” “Daksha” in “Haravilasam,” and in dance dramas like “Sivadhanurbhangam,” “Ksheerasagara Mathanam,” and “Rukmini Kalyanam.” Vedantam Rattayya Sarma has performed in over two thousand shows both within India and internationally. Beyond his performing career, he has been a dedicated teacher at the Kuchipudi Kalakshetra in Kuchipudi village since 1969, where he currently serves as the Principal. He has also contributed as a choreographer, creating productions such as “Prahlada Vijaya Yakshagana,” “Girija Kalyanam,” “Ardhanariswara,” “Ksheerasagara Mathanam,” and “Bhamakalapam.” His sons, Vedantam Raghava and Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao, have also followed in his footsteps as Kuchipudi dancers.
