Veena Basavarajaiah is a Bengaluru-based independent movement artist, recognized as a solo dancer and choreographer. Her extensive training encompasses Bharatanatyam, Kalaripayattu, Ballet, and Contemporary dance. She began her Bharatanatyam journey at the age of 13. Academically, she holds an undergraduate degree in law and a Master's degree in South Asian Dance Studies from Roehampton University, UK. Throughout her career, Veena has collaborated with numerous prominent dance companies, including Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Angika Dance Company, Attakkalari, Kalari Academy, Gati Forum, Nritarutya, Natyantharanga, and Yana Lewis Dance Co.. She has graced various stages across India, the UK, and Europe, showcasing her diverse repertoire. An empaneled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Veena is also known for her innovative approach to dance, exploring philosophical and socio-political themes through her contemporary performances. She is the creator of "Cartoon Natyam," an Instagram page where she uses comic panels to initiate discussions on stereotypes and social taboos prevalent in the classical dance world. Beyond performing, she serves as an educator, conducting creative workshops and teacher-training programs, and has also worked as a movement director and directed theatre productions.
