🪔 About

Véronique Azan, a distinguished French Kathak dancer, was born in Neuilly-Sur-Seine, Paris, France, in 1960. Her journey into Indian classical dance began at a young age when she first arrived in India at either seven or nine years old. Her parents, inspired by a Ravi Shankar concert, moved to India to study sitar and tabla, settling in Varanasi. Azan was initially trained in Kathak by Shrimati Alaknanda Devi, the sister of the legendary Sitara Devi. She later moved to Delhi, where she joined the Kathak Kendra and became a prominent student of the Kathak maestro, Pandit Birju Maharaj. Throughout her career, Azan performed extensively in India and internationally. Her notable performances include appearances at the Khajuraho Dance Festival and the Festivals of India held in France (1985), the USSR (1987), and Japan (1988). She was also featured in several dance-dramas choreographed by Birju Maharaj, touring with his troupe across India and Europe. In 1995, she was invited to perform at the prestigious Avignon Festival in France. Azan also spent a decade performing in Mexico. She was recognized as a beautiful and graceful dancer. Véronique Azan passed away in Bali on August 2, 2017.
