🪔 About
Guru Ganesh Hiralal Hasal is a veteran Kathak maestro and one of the foremost and senior-most exponents of the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak dance. Born in 1940, he was 76 years old in 2016, making him an octogenarian in 2026. He represents the seventh generation of the esteemed Hasal Khandaan, a family with a rich nine-generation legacy in classical dance and music. Guru Hasal received his initial Kathak training from his father, Acharyapad Hiralalji, and his late brother, Nritraj Hiralalji. His illustrious career spans over six decades, during which he has dedicated himself to the propagation and enrichment of Kathak. After working in Delhi and Calcutta, he eventually settled in Mumbai, which became his primary base. Guru Hasal is renowned for his purity in form and his masterful command over Laya (rhythm) and Taal (beats), particularly Vilambit Laya (32 beats) and occasionally Ativilambit Laya (64 beats), which are synonymous with his distinctive style. He has conducted examinations and taught Kathak in numerous reputed Kathak Kendras and has been instrumental in training hundreds of disciples globally under the Guru Shishya Parampara for over five decades. A pioneer, he introduced Kathak to Europe and South Africa in the early 1970s and 1980s. He has also engaged in experimental and collaborative projects with artists worldwide and created his own production, “SHAKTI ROOPA,” which explores empowered women through ancient Indian melodies and rhythms. Beyond performing and teaching, Guru Hasal is the chairperson of the Mumbai Kathak Kendra Sangeet and Nritya Academy, the Radha Krishna Educational and Charitable Trust (Mumbai), and RK Dance Theatre Inc (South Africa). His legacy is carried forward by his sons, Dr. Vinod Hasal (an 8th-generation exponent who founded the Radha Krishna Academy of Dance and Music in South Africa) and Pt. Umesh Hasal, and his granddaughters, Vinodini Hasal and Shubada Sharma, who represent the ninth generation of dancers. Awards & Honours: Rang Ratan Award, Maharashtra State Award.
