Vidhya Subramanian is a highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, actress, and teacher, renowned for her profound expertise in the Vazhuvoor style. Born in Chennai, India, she commenced her Bharatanatyam training at the age of eight, learning under eminent gurus S. K. Rajarathnam, Abhinaya exponent Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, and Padma Subrahmanyam. She performed her arangetram (debut solo) in 1984 at the age of sixteen. After relocating to the United States in 1990, Vidhya Subramanian established the Lasya Dance Company in California, which serves as both a production company and a school. Through Lasya, she has mentored numerous students, with 38 disciples having completed their arangetrams under her guidance. She is also the founder of Sparsha Arts Foundation, created in memory of her father, and initiated Kala Vedika in the Bay Area to foster a deeper understanding of Indian classical dance among performers and audiences. Subramanian's performances are characterized by stirring energy, refined elegance, and extraordinary sensitivity, captivating audiences worldwide. As an inventive choreographer, she frequently explores and challenges cultural and social themes, including female empowerment and patriarchal structures. Beyond dance, Vidhya holds a Master's degree in Theatre Arts and has actively participated in various theatre and film projects. Notably, she played the significant role of Vaanavan Maadevi in Mani Ratnam's epic Tamil films, Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023).
