🪔 About
Vijay Madhavan is an accomplished Indian classical dancer, primarily known for his expertise in Bharatanatyam. He is a senior disciple of the renowned dance maestro Chitra Visweswaran, under whom he received his formal training. Madhavan initially pursued a degree in Zoology and worked as a software product analyst before dedicating himself fully to Bharatanatyam. He holds a doctoral degree in Bharatanatyam from Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Vishwa Maha Vidhyala. Beyond his performances, Madhavan is recognized as a researcher and choreographer. He is the founder of Rechita Nrutyalaya, a Chennai-based dance institute. He is also the innovator behind "Natyagraphy," a novel encoding and documenting method for Bharatanatyam movements, which he developed after working with speech and hearing impaired students in Chennai in 2010. This system aims to provide a clear, graphical representation of dance movements, addressing the challenges of oral pedagogy in Indian dance. Madhavan is a regular performer in Bhagavata Mela Natakams, an ancient Telugu theatre art tradition, with over three decades of experience in the field. He has taken on significant roles in these natakams, such as Bhumi Devi in Prahlada Charitam and Mathanga Kanya in Harishchandra Natakam. He has performed extensively, including duet shows with his guru Chitra Visweswaran, and has shared stages with legendary gurus like Kelucharan Mohapatra and Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. His contributions to the art form have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from Sangeetha Natak Akademi. He has also contributed to social causes, performing as a fundraiser for mentally and intellectually disabled individuals in Singapore. He is proficient in nattuvangam, having received tutelage from his guru. Awards & Honours: Vasanthalakshmi - Narasimhachari Endowment Award for Talent Promotion (2002), Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, Best Dancer Award, NartakaNipuna, Best Male Dancer Award.
