🪔 About
Vijayalakshmi Shetty-Ahuja is a prominent Indian classical dance teacher and choreographer based in the USA, primarily known for her contributions to Bharatanatyam. She commenced her initial Bharatanatyam training at the age of six under P. G. Chellapa of Chennai. Her advanced training in Bharatanatyam was guided by the late K. N. Dandayudhapani Pillai and his daughter Uma Dandayudhapani Pillai. Beyond Bharatanatyam, Vijayalakshmi Shetty-Ahuja also received training in Kuchipudi from the esteemed Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam and in Mohiniyattam from P. G. Chellapa. In 1983, she established the Natraj Dance Academy in the Chicago area, which has since grown to become one of the largest and oldest Indian classical dance institutions in the region. The academy provides comprehensive training in the theory and practice of Bharatanatyam, and also offers instruction in Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, and Odissi. With over 37 years of teaching experience, Vijayalakshmi Shetty-Ahuja has imparted knowledge to several thousand students in the Chicagoland area, with over one hundred students having graduated from her academy. She is dedicated to preserving and promoting these classical Indian dance styles by adhering to their strict traditions.
