Vrinda Varma is a pioneering figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Kathakali, known for her role as a founding member and performer in the Tripunithura Kathakali Kendram's Vanitha Troupe, Kerala's first all-women Kathakali ensemble. The troupe was formed in 1975, marking a significant initiative to enable women's entry into the traditionally male-dominated art form. Vrinda Varma participated in the troupe's debut performance of "Kalyana Saugandhikam" at the Kathakali Kendram in 1975, where she enacted the role of Dharmaputra. This performance was unique as women enacted all roles, including singing and playing instruments like the chenda. The formation of the troupe was spearheaded by K.T. Rama Varma and Haridasan Thampuran brothers, members of the Kochi royal family, with encouragement from Kathakali doyen Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, who also mentored the girls. The Tripunithura Vanitha Kathakali Sangham, with Vrinda Varma as an integral part, has since performed extensively across India and abroad, giving over 2,000 shows. Their efforts have been crucial in breaking gender barriers in Kathakali, demonstrating that women can perform both female and male characters with dedication and skill. The troupe's sterling performances earned them many accolades, and they were honored with the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2017. Vrinda Varma's involvement in this groundbreaking troupe solidifies her place as an important contributor to the evolution and accessibility of Kathakali for women.
