Yshrene Moodley is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, exponent, choreographer, and teacher based in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Her journey into Indian classical dance began at a remarkably young age, having been introduced to the art form soon after she learned to walk. She made her debut performance at a national eisteddfod when she was just three years old. At the age of eight, Moodley embarked on a significant period of intensive Bharatanatyam training in India. What was initially planned as a five-year study period extended to a decade, during which she immersed herself deeply in the classical dance form. She returned to South Africa in 2001, having established a strong reputation as a dancer through numerous solo recitals and dance duets performed across both India and South Africa. Upon her return, Moodley transitioned into a dedicated role as a teacher and choreographer, committed to preserving and promoting Indian arts and culture by nurturing a new generation of dancers. She is closely associated with "The Dance Academy," an institution founded in 1978 by her mother, Shrimati Kantharuby Moonsamy, who is also a respected dancer and teacher and serves as Yshrene's greatest inspiration. Moodley believes that dance is a powerful medium for breaking down cultural barriers and instilling character and ideals. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes rigorous practice, reflecting her own commitment to the art form.
