Astad Deboo (1947-2020) was a pioneering Indian contemporary dancer and choreographer, renowned for his unique fusion of Indian classical dance forms with Western modern dance techniques. Left Bombay, began international training — Left Bombay on a cargo boat, hitchhiked through Europe, and later joined Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance in New York.

Reached New York
1977
Returned to India and studied Kathakali — Studied Kathakali under Guru E. Krishna Panikar in Thiruvalla, Kerala.
1986
Commissioned by Pierre Cardin — Choreographed a piece for Maya Plisetskaya, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet.
1995
Received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award — Awarded by the Government of India for his contribution to contemporary dance.
1995
Production 'Road Signs' toured India — Performed with a troupe drawn from Gallaudet University and Deboo's Indian students.
2004
Choreographed for film 'Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities' — Choreographed the Hindi film by painter M. F. Husain.
2005
Performed at 20th Annual Deaf Olympics — Performed in Melbourne, Australia, with a troupe of 12 young women with hearing impairment from the Clarke School for the Deaf, Chennai.
2007
Received Padma Shri — Awarded by the Government of India, one of India's highest civilian honors.
2009
Performed 'Breaking Boundaries' — Performed with fourteen street children from the NGO Salaam Baalak Trust.
2017
Invited to Buckingham Palace — Inaugurated the UK-India Year of Culture.
2020
Passed away in Mumbai — Died on December 10, 2020, at the age of 73.
