Deveika Chetram was a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, particularly known for her contributions to Kathak in the Indo-Caribbean diaspora. Journey Timeline
1976
Migrated to Canada — Began performing and dancing for local charitable organizations and temples due to community requests.
1979
Left Guyana — Was the Principal dancer and Choreographer for the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha until this year.
1989
Co-founded Tarana Dance School — Established with her sister Geeta Leo, teaching Kathak and Odissi, becoming the first West Indian institution for Indian dance in Canada.
2002
Established Tarana Dance Centre — Founded to teach and promote a variety of Indian dance styles.
2006
Brought Pandit Birju Maharaj to Canada — Organized Kathak workshops with Pandit Birju Maharaj and Saswati Sen for students and teachers.
2020
Passed away — After a 7-year battle with Alzheimer's.
