Mylapore Gowri Ammal, also known as Gauri Ammal or Gowri Amma, was a legendary Bharatanatyam dancer and guru, born in 1892 in Mylapore, British India (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu). Performance at Madras Music Academy — Danced at the Madras Music Academy as part of efforts to recognize Bharatanatyam as an art form.
1935
Last Public Performance — Performed at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Indian National Congress.
1936
Became Guru to Rukmini Devi Arundale — Rukmini Devi Arundale approached her to become her Bharatanatyam guru.
1947
Devadasi System Banned — Lost her position as a temple dancer at Kapaleeshwarar Temple due to the ban on the Devadasi system.
1956
Honored by Madras Music Academy
1958
Conferred Natya Kalanidhi title — Received the title from the Bharatnatya Academy.
1959
Received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award — Awarded for her contributions to Bharatanatyam.
1971
Died — Passed away on January 22, 1971.
