Padmini Dahanayake Ariyadasa, a celebrated Sri Lankan artist, was a pioneering figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, and also proficient in Kandyan dancing. She received her early training in Kandyan dancing under the tutelage of Chitrasena and Vajira. In 1954, she embarked on her journey into Bharatanatyam, joining Srimathi Rukmani…

Journey Timeline

1954

Joined Kalakshethra — Began classical Bharatanatyam training at Srimathi Rukmani Devi Arunidale's Kalakshethra in Chennai.

1959

Bharatanatyam Diploma — Completed her classical Bharatanatyam Diploma Course in April, becoming the first Sri Lankan to do so from Kalakshethra.

1959

Began teaching — Joined the Education Department as a dance instructor, a role she held for over 25 years.

1982

Founded Shri Padma Ranga — Established her own school of dancing, 'Shri Padma Ranga' (also 'Shree Padma Ranga Nrithya Nikethan').

1991

Awarded Kalasuri — Honoured with the Kalasuri award on May 22.

2023

Passed away — Padmini Dahanayake Ariyadasa passed away on May 16.
